MX 17 Review

Like the other models in Mizuno’s MX line of irons, Mizuno MX-17 irons are geared toward average and high handicap players (if you want player’s irons, take a look at Mizuno’s fine range of forged MP-series irons).  Some MX irons are forged (like the incredibly popular MX-23 model from 2003, for example) while others – like the MX-17 model that came out just a year later, in 2004 – are investment cast.

Both sets, Mizuno MX-17s and MX-23s, are cavity-back game-improvement models.  That means both are designed to be forgiving when you mishit the ball.  The heads of MX-17s are a little larger and have a little “extra forgiveness” built in, so they might be a better choice for beginners and other players who need more help than MX-23 irons provide.

Mizuno MX-17 irons have a clean, traditional look, featuring the wider topline and significant offset that inspire confidence at address.  Whether they’re sitting in your bag or you’re standing over the ball, they have an attractive, appealing appearance.  They’re not just a pretty face, though – an assortment of game-improvement technology is built into Mizuno MX-17 irons.

The 3- through 6-irons in a set of MX-17s feature a very deep pocket cavity, while the 7 through pitching wedge have a deeply undercut cavity.  The center of gravity is positioned low and deep to help players launch the ball on a higher trajectory.  Precisely engineered and positioned back cavity pads place additional weight behind the sweet spot, enhancing the clubs’ feel (although they don’t feel as sweet as Mizuno’s MP forged irons).  The sweet spot is larger than that of many other Mizuno irons, improving accuracy and control on mishits.

Wide soles improve turf interaction and make Mizuno MX-17 irons easier to hit from different types of lies (fairways, thick or wet rough, hardpan and so forth).  U-grooves on the face are intended to produce the spin rate that works best with every club in the set.  When it comes to game-improvement technology, there just isn’t much that Mizuno left out of these irons.

If you’re a mid- to high-handicap player, Mizuno MX-17 irons can help your game in several ways.  They’re easy to hit from different types of lies, they promote a high ball flight (something that many players need help with), and they provide a significant amount of forgiveness on mishit shots.  Best of all, they’re Mizuno irons so you know the quality is there.
